Afflicted with tuberculosis, the poor soul of the Captain is rendered helpless in bed almost half the time. He is just about the only Captain who can afford to miss any Captain meetings, by virtue of his weak health, and he takes this to his advantage at times as we can see from the Bounto incident where his absence in meetings was really attributed to tedious Bounto research in the library.

His illness has also left a permanent mark on his silky tresses, painting it a permanent white. Despite his frail physique, Captain Ukitake ain’t no pushover as he is one of the first students to graduate from the First Captain Yamamoto’s academy. Besides, he IS a captain, yes?

His former lieutenant Shiba Kaien died fighting a Hollow who fused his cells with him, thus Captain Ukitake is the only one in the Gotei 13 without a fukutaichou. Instead, he is currently fussed over by two third seat morons endlessly vying for his attention.
